What is Homeopathy?

July 24, 2012 by Dr Karen Hack

Homeopathy is a system of medicine which emerged from Germany towards the end of the eighteenth century, thanks to the work of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann.

The emphasis in homeopathy resides in the principle “like cures like”, and the belief that the body’s own healing and regenerative capacity can be elicited to restore health. It is an energetic form of medicine which harnesses the body’s ability to heal itself.

According to homeopathy, disease is a disturbance of the life force, or vital force inherent in each individual, and the associated symptoms reflect the nature of this disturbance. A properly selected homeopathic remedy is believed to provoke the vital force, so that the body’s own healing power can correct the disturbance and produce a cure.

Classical homeopathy is considered a complete healing system, capable of addressing a wide array of health problems. It can treat acute and chronic illnesses, especially in the earlier stages. Migraines, allergies, autoimmune disorders, arthritis, and chronic viral and bacterial infections have all been reportedly treated successfully. It is an excellent method for self-treating minor illnesses, such as flu and colds, and for stimulating general health.

It is particularly helpful for children. It is reported to resolve gently and effectively, such problems as recurrent ear infections, colic, croup, diarrhea, bladder infections, teething pain, hyperactivity, and emotional problems. Children respond quickly, because their symptoms are often relatively simple and uncomplicated. Many parents prefer homeopathy for their children because it is a non-toxic approach to healthcare.
